Sonal Singh: Face of the Month

Sonal Singh won the title of Mrs. Asia Universe 2016 in July in India out of 250+ applicants from all over Asia. Then she went to compete at the Mrs. Universe competition in China in August. There, Sonal placed in the top 10 (out of 80 delegates) and received the title of Mrs. Universe-Beautiful 2016. Let have a look at Sonal’s life and special moments:

    My parents call me Sonia
  • Home Town:
    I was born in New Delhi, grew up in Canada and studied and lived in London. Now I’m back in New Delhi.

    Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (Canada)

    London School of Economics (LSE)
  • Achievements and Awards:
    1. Universe-Beautiful 2016
    2. Asia-Universe 2016
    3. Published an article with the United Nations Development Programme on HIV/AIDS funding in Africa
    4. University Scholarship Program recipient (for graduating in top 1%)

  • Hobbies/ Interest:
    Part of a Theatre Group, Writing, Traveling and exploring (and sometimes living in) remote places such as Brasilia and a small town in Gujarat

    I’m a huge fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and absolutely loved Bajirao Mastani and Ram Leela

    Right now can’t get ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ out of my head
  • Favourite Food:
    Because I’ve lived away from home for so long my favourite is still Rajma Chawal. I also have a major sweet tooth and love dark chocolate.
  • Favourite Drink:
    Addicted to coffee also I love a good wine
  • Favourite International Destination:
    Italy or Brazil
  • Favourite Happening Nightlife Place:
    I usually stick to local places in my neighbourhood like Piano Man & Depot 29
  • Who has inspired you in your life and why?
    My mother, she taught me that within every difficulty lies an opportunity. If you have the right mind-set, you can overcome any challenge.
  • Do you believe in Destiny?
    I believe things happen for a reason but we are masters of our fate
  • A place you love to travel in India?
    Goa & Mumbai because I love the sea
  • What is a childhood memory that stands out?
    The first time I came to India when I was 7 years old my Chacha (Uncle), who is no longer with us, picked me up from the airport, let me sit on his lap as he drove the car and took me to Archie’s where he let me pick out any toy I wanted. We then went to Nirula’s where we had a hot fudge sundae.
  • Fitness Mantra:
    Fitness is a lifestyle. You have to live it, breathe it, and own it.
  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
    I love to discover new places in Delhi, catching up with friends, watching films and playing with my dog ‘Biscuit’.

  • What do you value most in life?
  • What is your dream job?
    I’m blessed to be living it – being a professional coach and mentor empowering people from all walks of life from board-level executives to lower-income young women
  • Papa’s or Mom’s Advice or a principle in life you will never forget:
    Never let anyone limit you. Only you can determine what you can and cannot achieve. And you can achieve anything.
  • What is the happiest moment of your life?
    My happiest moment was when I was living in a small town in Gujarat working with the Aga Khan Foundation on enabling women’s access to health care and information.
  • Any Advice to Students or New Comers:
    Before you decide on a profession go check out how it actually feels to be living that life (e.g. intern or talk to people in that field). It may not be as glamorous or exciting as you think.
  • After modelling what next?
    Modelling is a hobby. My current focus is to get my community intervention on Domestic Violence underway.
  • What were your best/worst subjects in school?
    Best: History, Literature, Languages
    Worst: Science
  • What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done for you?
    Recently someone sent me a message saying, “the café I go to has coffee, it has milk but it’s missing the sweetness that comes from you.” If I wasn’t laughing so hard, I might’ve been offended!
  • Single is better or married life?
    If you find the person who completes you, there’s no looking back
  • How would someone get your special attention?
    By ignoring me
  • What pet would you love to have?
    I already have a Havanese pup named Biscuit. If I could have any animal in the world it would definitely be a Giraffe.
  • If you weren’t (whatever you are presently doing), what would you be up to right now?
    I would be teaching English somewhere in South America
  • What’s your one annoying habit?
    I’m very OCD and cannot stand mess or clutter.
